During the last few months my reading list has exploded: 100 ways to use social media in the classroom, 15 ways to engage your students with word clouds, 100 best teacher tools, 25 ways to use twitter in your classroom, 50 of the best iphone apps for education, 20 exciting ways to create presentations etc, etc, etc. I want to read them all, try them all out, show and tell on my blog. It’s all so exciting….wouldn’t it be brilliant if every teacher could use every tool now?
Well, in reality it’s easy to be overwhelmed by all of this. Teachers may be stimulated to give it a go, but overwhelmed and not sure about where to start. Rather than knowing a bit of information about a lot of tools, maybe it’s better to focus on how to use a few tools in more detail.
There are exciting, real life events happening around the world as we speak. Yes, Expedition Titanic has really captured my interest and will be a perfect topic for me to show you how web 2.0 technologies can be used in the classroom.
On the left side of my blog is the live, Expedition Titanic twitter stream . Things are a bit slow at the moment but are sure to get moving on August 22nd when the dive begins. So, why twitter? It took me a while to figure this out, but it’s such a powerful tool for the classroom. I would NEVER have said that at the tea table in the staff room before I did the VicPLN program.
Have a read of the twitter stream, then click on any link or word and you will be taken to more information about that tweet. There is some HISTORY about people on the Titanic, some GEOGRAPHY about the Seven Seas, some BIOLOGY about the microorganisms that are actually “eating” the Titanic and some CHEMISTRY about corrosion and bio electric activity. So, there you have it, twitter isn’t for silly gossip, it’s for getting rich information, on any topic, from experts all around the world. It’s like a virtual textbook…but way more exciting!

Also, I am using another tool in this blog that you might find useful. It’s called Apture and will allow you to find more information on what I am writing about. Try it by double clicking on the word ULTRANET now, a little search window will appear, click on that and another window will drop down giving you heaps of information. Try it again with a few more words….it even brings videos and images straingt into my blog. A search bar also appears at the top of my blog if you need to find more information. A cool tool.
